COTO is this weekend! 20th Annual Capital of Texas Open

The Waterloo Club no longer runs this event - and hasn’t for several years - but we do always set up a booth at Pease Park and hold a membership drive and some kind of fun, fundraising event (Thanks Team Justice!).

This year the fun event is a putting contest, but not just any putting contest; this time it is a Jump-Putt competition! Very Happy

We will also be giving away door prizes for our current club members plus anyone who joins the club during the weekend (or renews their membership). So be sure to come by the Waterloo Club tent to get your ticket. We’ll be there at Pease all day Saturday and Sunday.

This is a great chance to join the club at a discounted price: just $10 for a Player Membership (normally $20) or just $25 for a Supporting Membership (normally $40).

Info about a cool event from Disc Nation...

Subject: Austin Disc Golfers - Participate in the World's 1st Celebrity Disc Golf Event this Saturday!

Disc Nation and Beyond the Lights are proud to announce the World's 1st Celebrity Disc Golf Event this Saturday at the Lost Pines Hyatt in Bastrop, TX. Join members of the cast and crew of TV's Friday Night Lights, as well as other celebrities, for an 18-hole Disc Golf event on the Colorado river at the beautiful Lost Pines Hyatt Resort.

Mike Olse generously donated his time to design an super-fun and beginner-friendly course for the event. The focus of this event is FUN and the folks at Beyond the Lights are enthusiastic about disc golf, but most are not serious players, so we've designed this event to appeal to beginners. Registration is $20 per person and each player will receive an event t-shirt, custom-stamped golf disc, entry into a raffle featuring prizes that include a basket from the event, a Disc Nation gift certificate, a free entry into the Windy Hill Putting Challenge, and more. The event is comprised of one round of 18 holes and there will be no payout or prizes based on performance. Of course, the proceeds from this event go to the Beyond the Lights charity which raises money to help fund research on spinal cord injuries.

This is a perfect event for anyone who wants the rare opportunity to play disc golf with celebrities, wants to turn a new player onto the sport we all love, or who simply wants to play a very unique event on the newest course in the Austin-area. Celebrities scheduled to play in this event include Friday Night Lights' Kyle Chandler and Brad Leland, and King of the Hill's Johnny Hardwick. We're expecting additional celebrities as well, and you just never know who will show up at a cool Austin-area event like this!

To register: www.austincommunityfou...iser_id=76
General Information About This Event: www.beyondthelights.org/v2/ (Click on the Disc Golf Link)

If you are interested then register as soon as possible to guarantee your spot in this one-of-a-kind event! We will accept registrations the day of the event, space permitting.

For additional information please contact Disc Nation at 512-280-1115 or customerservice @ discnation.com.

We Hope to see you there!!

Waterloo Disc Golf Club will be holding a work day at Circle C on Saturday, May 1st, at 8am. If you aren’t going out to Circle R for World’s Biggest that day, please come by and help improve our course. Heck, even if you are going out there, feel free to stop by on the way. Good karma for all.

Please bring gloves, rakes and shovels. If you have any questions or want more information, contact Dan Mueller at 293-7592.

We know it is last minute, but the Waterloo Club and SADA would really like to help out at TWC with some “Lady Lounges” for all the women golfers. These are spots on the course where the players can stop to get some refreshments and enjoy some of our local hospitality. It is a great way to let all the women know that they have the support of the entire disc golf community.

We’ve got the pop-ups, coolers, tables, etc, but we need some volunteers to run the stations. We want to have at least one, but it would be great if we could get enough people to do two or even three stations.

The tournament is this weekend so there is not much time left. Please help Waterloo and SADA help our women!

If you can help out with this great project, please contact Josh Rippie or Stevo Barnes.

Josh Rippie: 653-9338

Stevo Barnes: 750-2928

Thanks!!!

SEARIGHT DISC GOLF COURSE IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!!!!!

WOOHOO!!!

I received this just a little while ago from SADA...

No, this is not an early April Fool's joke - as of an hour ago, all baskets were assembled and installed.

SEARIGHT DISC GOLF COURSE IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!!!!!

I want to thank John Paul from the City and the volunteers that took time out on their Wednesday workday to get these baskets up in record time today: Mike "Meteor Mike" Schulgen, Bert Benavides, Miguel Guerrero, Jeremy "Smoke" Sanchez, Kenny G, and I'm sure a handful of others. Thanks guys!

In addition, I must thank the numerous volunteers that have come out all the workdays to make this happen, with notable thanks to Scott Allen, James Gonzales, Aaron Stair, Del Stair, and Tom Peirce for coming out for all the workdays, assisting with the necessary equipment and tools, and working hand in hand with City workers to make the workdays smooth-sailing and productive.

They certainly are not alone - there are many, many more people that gave their sweat and blood for this project - you all know who you are and you are oh-so appreciated!

Lastly, thanks to Mike Olse, Gene Faulk, Rosie Weaver, and the other City and APF team members that worked closely with SADA throughout the renovations. Thanks to Waterloo and DiscNation for continuing to support the project financially, but just as important, for inspiring more folks to come out for the workdays.

SADA will continue to work with the City and the Austin Parks Foundation to maintain the park and help with repairs. The club is working on holding a benefit tournament in the next month or so, so please keep that in mind so you can help us continue to pay this forward, for this park and all the other disc golf parks in the City.

Thank you everyone!!!!! See you on the course!
Steph

Here is something that Stephanie just sent out about Searight...

Good morning everyone -
Please keep next Saturday open on your calendars to help us out at Searight for another workday (Jan 30th). It's time to install teesign poles, spread more mulch, and anything else we have ready to go by next weekend.

The Searight workday will start at 8:00. We'll likely work until around noon or 1:00, but it could be longer if the City lets us know about any new tasks that are needed to start by then.

Of course, workdays are weather-dependent, but we're hoping for clear skies all week so we can have another great workday.

Thanks to everyone that came out last time, and thanks in advance to everyone that makes it out this time - have a great weekend!

We just got word from Stephanie Allen at South Austin Disc Association of changes to the Searight construction plan, and the sudden scheduling of a work day this weekend.

Stephanie sent:

Good afternoon all –

Due to a change in plans, this weekend all 18 baskets will be pulled so that the City can work on the entire course at once (rather than keeping 9 holes open at a time). The course will be back up and running once all work is completed.

In light of this, we are holding our first big work day this Saturday, January 9th. Starting at 8:00 a.m., we'll be:

--Pulling baskets, benches and trash cans
--Spreading mulch on the back nine
--Cleaning off the new tee pads on the back nine
--General trash pick up

We'll have a breakfast burritos in the morning - first come, first serve. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!! If you have a rake to help with the mulch-spreading, please bring it along.

The amount of hours we spend will depend on how many folks come out to help, so please put on your warmest jacket, earmuffs and scarves and come on out!

Thanks in advance and see you out there!

Austin's newest disc golf course is at MetCenter. MetCenter is Austin's premier 550-acre mixed-use business park. Over 2,000,000 sf complete; 3,000,000 sf more available, including approved site plans - easily modified - ready for immediate construction. MetCenter is located in Southeast Austin at the intersection of U.S. Highway 183 and State Highway 71.

Directions to the course - From I-35 and Ben White Blvd (SH 71), go east Ben White. Take the Montopolis Dr. exit and turn right onto Montopolis Dr. Turn left onto Burleson Rd. Turn left onto Metropolis Dr. Turn right into the first parking lot. The course will be on your left.

Enjoy,

Here is more info on the November 14th Trees for Pease workday. It is very important that we get as many disc golfers out there helping as possible!

The planting starts at 9:30 am

Meet by the big picnic table area at the south end of the park (by the playground). When you check in with the organizers, please mention you are a disc golfer (and heck, wear a disc golf shirt so the other volunteers will know too).

They recommend wearing clothes you don't mind getting dirty, bring gloves and if you have a wheelbarrow that you can bring, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can register as a volunteer by clicking here: salsa.democracyinactio..._KEY=54712

If you want to get there a little early, they will also have Veterans Day ceremonies and tree planting from 8:30 to 9 am.

After the work, there will be live music and refreshments from noon - 3:00 pm (music by Will Sexton and the Wine and Nuts; refreshments courtesy of Blue Star Cafeteria, Uncle Billy's Brew&Que, and Austin Java).

Come on out and celebrate Pease, Love, and Rock & Roll!

If you can't make it but would like to donate funds to the project, you can send a check to Austin Parks Foundation (payable to APF), just put in the memo line "Trees for Pease" project, and also mention that you are a disc golfer. Because it is payable to APF you can get a tax deduction for making a charitable contribution. APF, 816 Congress Ave, Suite 1680, Austin, TX, 78701. You can also donate online by going to the Member Page of the APF website and making a gift to the Pease Park Fund - www.austinparks.org/member.html The APF has figured that it takes about $150 per tree to plant it and keep it irrigated.

The Waterloo Club is donating $300 to the project, and we are working hard to get a lot of volunteers there to help that day. We hope you can join us in this worthy effort to improve Pease Park.

Thanks,
Waterloo Disc Golf Club

KXAN (channel 36) is running a story this evening (mon.nov 2nd) on Pease Park and the changes in store for the park and the disc golf course, and some of the controversies. The main story will be on their 5 pm broadcast (supposedly about half-way through, but who really knows what time it will actually air), and maybe, possibly shorter versions at 6pm and 10pm.

If you watch, be kind – even after all these years interviews still make me very nervous; and who knows what kind of sound bites will get pulled out of the full interview. But hey, I made a couple of putts Smile

We got word from the park supervisor at Circle C that there are some very aggressive ground hornets on hole #10 at Circle C. The city has flagged off the area and will be treating it, but possibly not for another few days. So if you are playing out there, be sure to avoid that area; apparently the hornets have attacked some golfers already.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Also, coming up next week on Wednesday evening is a City of Austin meeting about Pease Park and the impact future city work will have on the course. Here is the email we received from the city about it. I believe the location listed is the activity center near W. 29th and N. Lamar (across W. 29th from the bike shop). It would be great to have a big turnout from the golfers to show that we really do care about our course at Pease.

Pease Park Water Quality and Stream Restoration Project

We have scheduled a disc golf stakeholder's meeting concerning how the project will affect the disc golf course at Pease Park.

Public Meeting

Subject: Pease Park Restoration Project: How this will affect your Disc Golf Course

Date: November 4, 2009

Time: 6:00pm

Location: Senior Activity Center: 2874 Shoal Crest Ave

Info: Bill Wells @ 974-7828

----------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, mark your calendars for a couple of work days at Pease on November 14th and November 21st. These won’t be for work on the disc golf course, but instead will be hosted by the group Trees for Pease, and will be all about replanting a bunch of trees at the park to help replace/repair some of the damage and loss of trees due to the drought and several recent severe storms. We have been told that the tree planting won’t negatively affect the disc golf course (it may not help or enhance the course either, but it will help the park as a whole). This is a very worthy project and an excellent chance to show the city and the other big user groups and supporters of Pease Park that the disc golf community cares about the park and wants to make it better. We’ll have more info on the workdays as they get closer.

Thanks,
Waterloo Disc Golf Club

What time do the work days start?

Is there anything that the volunteers need to bring (or would help to bring if they have it)?

Thanks,
Gordon
